Angelfish by Zindy Angelfish by Zindy
This was a little test I did last weekend. I am going to do my first mermaid drawing and I wanted to at least have tried drawing the water and fish to see how well I would do. Angelfish is one of my favorite fish, they have something elegant about them. It was fun to do this. This is a photo of the drawing and it doesn't show the sparkly parts very well but the scan was even worse.
In December I got a pretty girl from Denmark, Helene, to do a couple of photos for me for the mermaid girl. I am really exited to get started, she's a sweet girl and I really do look forward mixing it all together to hopefully a great drawing (:

Last weekend we went out to buy some new pastels, I didn't have any blues in this nuance. I've been watching a lot of programs with fish and water and studied it's colors and movement. I have come to love the ocean so much the past year, not really sure where it comes from as I used to fear water when I was younger.

If you want to see my new pastels you can see them at my blog here: [link]
 Mmmm pastels *drooling like Homer Simpson* Is there anything better :D

Ooooh, pretty angelfish! I have one at home, but its colouring is a little different. I think the fins look a little fuzzy, but apart from that it's great. Can't wait to see the mermaid drawing :)

Wow! I like it a lot Zindy. The blue background is also very well done. It seems the fish is swiming in the water for real.

I suppose that life doesn't get too much better for you with new pastels on the desk! :) (is very happy for you). Really, you work so comfortably with pastels that you increasing your range of colour palette puts a smile on my face! Now, go and use them!

They're probably the prettiest of the freshwater fish. I was confused for a moment since I couldn't remember if they were freshwater or brackish water fish, but I guess they're freshwater, haha. Not that that has anything to do with your picture!

The fish looks really realistic. The pattern is good and the style of the fins and outline looks good too, especially with all the "ribbing" in the fins.

You usually use a reference right? If you used a picture, I'm curious if the plant was real or not. Sorry, only wondering because even though I don't have much experience with freshwater aquariums, I didn't recognize it.

Great work of art!

Thanks so much.
The seaweed is kind of loosely based on real seaweed. Just looked at different photos and did it freely. Same goes for the fish. it was a lot of fun to do.
Do you have fish?

Not currently. I always had beta fish for a long time though. I got lucky and had hearty fish that lived to be over five years, even if I neglected them at times. Fish kept in bowls tend to have shorter life spans than those in tanks.

I seriously debated maintaining a marine aquarium. Fascinated with the wide diversity and biology, I designed the tank I wanted, what would go where, what fish I would like, etc. In the end I had to decide against it though. Many of them have very unique needs that I could certainly handle, but I wouldn't have friends or family that could handle the feeding, the pH testing, the constant monitoring, etc if I was ever unavailable. Like I was hospitalized for a bladder and kidney infection a couple years ago. I wouldn't have anyone to take them in or babysit.

That, and with 2 dogs, 3 cats and a rabbit, I love animals but they aren't cheap! The aquarium would have been beautiful, but it wasn't really suited for my current lifestyle, I guess you could say.

If I ever got married, I'd totally get one. I'd trust my partner wouldn't abandon my fish!

But if I could have anything, it would be a Regal Angelfish and/or a Flame Angelfish. Wow, this reply is kind of long! Sorry!

Thank you, glad you do. And yeah, I don't see that too often either (: The photo is not so detailed, I drew the scales mostly visible at the back end and near the head. Hope it gets more visible and better on the actual mermaid drawing.

I wasn't sure if you had only made them near those areas, or if your scanner was a poofface (much like mine, lol.) =] It's very good, I'm sure your mermaid will be wonderful, I cannot wait to see it.
